AltaVista® Search Engine How-To

The AltaVista® Demo uses the One Monkey, Inc. Text Ad Hosting Solution to demonstrate how a site with dynamic search capabilities can increase its profitability by offering the sales of non-intrusive text ads to advertisers who want to gain new customers for as little as $10.

The AltaVista® Demo was put together to highlight One Monkey's Text Ad Hosting for Search Engines. It uses AltaVista's Search Engine 3.0 for finding information on an internal network using simple search queries (Note: The solution works equally well for internal and external web searches). The AltaVista® Demo needed a way to offer self-service text advertising on their search sites without spending time and money on in-house development or outsourcing. They decided on One Monkey's Text Ad Hosting Solution which offers a third party hosting solution allowing them to sell cost-per-impression (CPM) and/or cost-per-click (CPC) text ads at the prices they set. Implementation required only minor code changes in order to pass each search string to One Monkey in order to allow their advertisers to take advantage of keyword targeting which eliminates waste and increases relevance. Now they can sell, keyword targeted, text ads on their search sites and let One Monkey take care of all of the credit card processing, reporting, and customer support for them.

Situation

The AltaVista® Search Demo was installed straight from the AltaVista® demo download. It is the default demonstration supplied by AltaVista® to demonstrate their 3.0 search engine.

This example was put together solely to demonstrate how to incorporate One Monkey's Text Ad Hosting for Search Engines into an existing search enabled site.

Solution

(Note: It is recommended that you only use the Quick Reference to help you jump to specific information after you have walked through the entire explanation at least once. This is because the example is linear. Every subsequent explanation builds upon all previous explanations.)

If we use the way Google's AdWords Select™ program delivers its text ads as a proven guideline for text based advertising, we will need to make some minor HTML code changes. This is because our text ads are currently being delivered to the bottom of the page instead of the right margin like Google's. Use the Picture below as an example of how to wrap the given code snippet in an HTML table to manipulate how the text ads appear on your search results page.

Below you will see the results of wrapping the code snippet in an HTML Table. As you can see, the default text ad is now showing up in the right hand margin on the search results page.

Now that we have our text ads showing up where we want them it is time to utilize the Testing Mode functionality provided by One Monkey. The Testing Mode functionality is provided so developers can easily see if they have correctly integrated their search engine specific dynamic search query into the code snippet provided by One Monkey. You will need to be logged in to your newly created One Monkey Keyword Hosting account to access the Change Ad Format form. This is where you can turn on the Testing Mode. (Note: The picture below details all the features of the Change Ad Format form so pay special attention to the note at the bottom of the page which details the Testing Mode field.)

Now that Testing Mode has been enabled run another search to view the Test Mode Output that is delivered to the search results page above the default text ad.

Now that we can see that testing mode is on and we have the basic code snippet wrapped in an HTML Table and showing up correctly on our search results page, it is time for the most difficult task. We must add the search query to the code snippet. (Note: This will be different for each search engine so simply note where we add the AltaVista specific code and what the name of the search parameter is, so you will have a better idea where to add your code when you are programming for your specific search engine type.)

Now that we have added the search engine code that dynamically supplies the search query to the code snippet it is time to return to the Change Ad Format form. You will again need to be logged in to your newly created One Monkey Keyword Hosting account to access the Change Ad Format form. This time we will be submitting the Query String Parameter Name in the Query String Parameter Name field. This enables the One Monkey engine to recognize the search string and deliver text ads based on the keywords provided by the current user.

Now that we have submitted the query string parameter name we are again ready to run a search and view the results. As you can see by the picture below we have successfully implemented the search parameter with the code snippet because Test Mode is showing the current search string successfully parsed by the One Monkey engine.
